What to do when feeling ill?? That is the question.

Friday I woke up not feeling so well. I've got a mild flu, so not to worry. If I'm correct, I'm not the only one. If you are up to date with reading all the blogs, you know that more quilters in the Netherlands have mentioned not feeling very well. There must be a nasty virus flying around.

Friday was spent sleeping, but yesterday afternoon I thought I would try to work some more on my feathered star block.

IMG_4501 As I'm finding it quit difficult getting this pattern right, I'm checking myself along the way by comparing my progress with an other finished block.

IMG_4502 The middle part is nearly finished and I can nearly connect it with the left part of the block. Sorry, didn't take a picture of the last part.

IMG_4504 A very handy tool. Clover is so clever. Getting the thread through the needle isn't a problem anymore.

To be truthful, I still don't feel that well. So I'm going to have another lazy day, lounging on the couch. But before I close this post. I want to tell you of a surprise call I received. Facebook is a great way to connect. A quilter from South Africa is visiting the Netherlands, before continuing her trip to the US. I'm finally going to meet Ruth in person. We are meeting up for coffee, and maybe we might even have enough time to show her around. Looking forward to this.

Sewing stress

I'm going to make this

Medallion sampler

We are using Hanne Vibeke de Koning-Stapel's pattern.

So last Saturday I had my first sewing class. We learned how to use the sewing machine and cut fabric with a roller so that in the next couple of weeks I can make some Jacobs Ladder blocks. I have to make 8 blocks and 4 half blocks. As this is very time consuming I'm feeling some stress. Will I get it all done??

This is the group of lady's who are also going to make this Madellion Sampler. We are having a lunch break in this picture.

IMG_4432 Here are some impressions of our class. I'm doing this course at Laura's Quilt Atelier in Amersfoort.

One is sewn by hand, the other with the sewing machine.

Something different

Today, yes Thursday, I went to Amsterdam to look and buy some fabrics for the machine sewing course that starts coming Saturday.  I drove into town and parked the car in the centre of the city. No traffic congestion and no problems finding a parking space. It must be my day !

For those who are living in the Netherlands aren't going to have any problems guessing where I went. IMG_4400

Yes, I went to Den Haan & Wagenmakers and bought these lovely fabrics.

IMG_4402

Guess, who went with me? Yes, my quilt buddy, Marja.

IMG_4403

She is going upstairs to looks for some fabrics for Leanne's House, block of the month quilt ''May your heart make you grateful''. You know, this one.

We also popped in next door. I bought the little sign and tin notion box. Aren't they cute?

IMG_4407

Afterwards we walked back to the Bijenkorf, where we had a lovely lunch. And as we walked past the Clinique counter on our way out, I had to stop and have a look. Naturally, I couldn't contain myself.  I bought the following items, lipstick, mascara, plush and concealer.

I had a fun day. At the moment the washing machine is doing its work. Yes, I wash my fabrics, before cutting them up to become a quilt. Tomorrow another no-work day. Finally catching up on some quality time.

In memory of

My 'oma' (grandmother) died on the 13th of January at the age of 96.

You wouldn't guess she was that old. This picture was taken of her last April. Grandmothers are just "antique" little girls. The little girl is my niece and her great granddaughter. They are getting ready to blow bubbles.

In Memory of You

I find an old photograph
and see your smile.
As I feel your presence anew,
I am filled with warmth
and my heart remembers love.

I remember who you used to be
the laughter we shared
and wonder what you have become.
Where are you now,
Where did you go,
When the body is left behind
and the spirit is released to fly?

Perhaps you are the morning bird
singing joyfully at sunrise,
or the butterfly that dances
so carelessly on the breeze
or the rainbow of colors
that brightens a stormy sky
or the fingers of afternoon mist
delicately reaching over the mountains
or the final few rays of the setting sun
lighting up the skies
edging the clouds with a magical glow.

I miss your being
but I feel your presence,
In whatever form you choose to take,
however you now choose to be.

I remember you.

FIETS-group

I guess you must wonder what this means. FIETS-group stands for 'fijn individueel en toch samen'. Some of you are now saying 'translation please': nicely individually but together. I guess you have to be Dutch to appreciate this abbreviation.

Anyhow, our first FIETS-group was the beginning of January. We always start with 'show and tell'. How do you like this?

IMG_4382

Or this?

IMG_4385

Maybe, you prefer these blocks

Or maybe this baby quilt

Here is Aagje, our teacher, showing how it is done.

IMG_4391

Here is another block in progress. Yes, mine!! Slowly getting there. Centre block is nearly done.

For those who would like to do something different. You can now learn how to make this miniature quilt shop at the Quilt Cellar. Although I was tempted to enroll for this mini-workshop, I decided to wait till fall. I'm just too busy. Some of the quilters in the above picture did enroll. Expect to see some pictures of their projects in the near future.
